ARE YOU READY?
Written by Tabitha, this excellent list of questions is always timely.
Her name has been changed to protect her privacy.
(Another successful adoption associated with Christian Adoption.)
Are you secretly or not so secretly, hoping that adoption will cure your infertility? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Are you thinking that you're going to "settle" for an adopted child, because you cannot have a biological child? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Do you see adoption as "giving up" or acknowledging defeat? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Do you think that you're doing such a great service to a child that adoption should be free? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Do you know in your heart that you cannot love an adopted child as much as your own biological child? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Are you running from a miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of a child? Are you running towards adoption so that you won't have to face your grief? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Do you see adoption as an act of charity towards an "unwanted" child? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Do you feel that the child you adopt will be more blessed to have you as parents than you will be to be their parent? If so, then you aren't ready for adoption.
Do you want to adopt a child of another race because you don't feel you can adopt from your race of choice? If so, then you aren't ready to adopt outside of your race.
Do you see children through colorblind glasses, and feel that race and culture can be ignored? If so, then you are not yet ready to adopt a child from a different race or culture.
Are you worried about how your neighbors will react to the adoption of a child of a different race? If so, then you are not yet ready to adopt a child from a different race or culture.
Are you seeking to integrate the world as your personal adoption mission? If so, then you are not ready to adopt a child from a different race or culture.
Do you have feelings of hatred or resentment towards a certain foreign country (i.e. China, Korea, Russia)? If so, then you are not yet ready to adopt a child from that particular country.
Are you prepared to educate others, in a kind and Christ-like manner, about tolerance and love? Or do you plan to react sharply and angrily in front of your child when racial comments are made? The answer to this question will tell you whether or not you are ready to adopt outside your country or race.
Do you see all children, both biological and chosen, as precious gifts from God? If so, then you may be ready for adoption.
Do you see a child's race or culture as a rich opportunity for learning, teaching and exploring -- something to be faced and not ignored? If so, then you may be ready to adopt a child of another race.
Have you resolved your feelings about your infertility? Are you at peace with God's plan for your life? If so, then you may be ready for adoption.
Do you need to give birth? Or do you just need to be a parent?
HAVE YOU CONSULTED WITH GOD? OR HAVE YOU MADE YOUR DECISION INDEPENDENTLY? The latter spells disaster, and the former results in victory.
Adoption is not the answer for everyone, and the road can be every bit as harrowing as infertility. But the rewards for staying the course are immeasurable.
