God does not withhold from His children that which is best for them and brings glory to Himself. Adoption is such a spiritual journey -- either we let God mold and shape our hearts or we become hard and defiant because we aren't getting what we want (whatever that might be!). A wise man told Dave and I (when we first began the journey towards getting Michael) that we cannot adopt to fill the hole in our hearts. That was meant for only God Himself to fill. We must adopt for the child. We must consider how God wants to place His choicest child into our home to fulfill His plan for the child and for us. Many times recently, Dave and I have tucked Michael in at night and said to each other "Just think . . . when God brings us Michael's brother or sister and we tuck him/her in at night, we'll think back to Jean's changed mind and say 'if we had gotten that little guy, we would never have this one."' We said that many times after Michael came into our lives. If we go ahead of God or try to manipulate people and situations to fill the hole in our hearts, not only will we miss out on HIS truest best for us, but we will forever alter what might have been God's choice for that baby (and the RIGHT adoptive couple) which we got out of our own selfish ambition. We must seek God with our whole hearts and let Him fill any voids that are there. He is able!
About 2 months after Shelly wrote this perspective about the adoption process, she and Dave successfully adopted Anna! They were blessed with their second chosen child, His best, God's "champagne" child for their family.
