HEART BROKEN, MENTALLY CONFUSED & EMOTIONALLY HANDICAPPED
These words adequately describe what an adoptive couple feels like when a birthmother "match" or placement has fallen through. Or when an adoptive couple discovers negative medical details about their upcoming placement. They are heartbroken, because their expectations have suddenly been dashed to pieces. They are mentally confused, because they were sure in their thinking about the success of the adoption process and now feel like the rug has been pulled out from under them. They are emotionally handicapped, because they are trying to sort through emotions that are contradictory and often are at cross-purposes with a Christian mindset. Having "been there & done that" a number of times, we can fully understand the pain and the grief that is a part of this devastating process. How well we remember thinking that no one understood how we felt and there was no one to talk to about our mental state. And we were right--we did not know anyone that had already traveled these same paths of life. But, we discovered there were only 2 options: give up or press on.
King David, after the battle at Ziklag found himself in a worse state of affairs. His two wives and all his children had been abducted, his army had turned against him and wanted to stone him. He had NO ONE to turn to--not on this earth. For a moment--maybe--David was heart broken, mentally confused, and emotionally handicapped. But, David sought his deliverance and his encouragement in the Lord his God. " but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God." (I Samuel 30:6) He had no where else to turn and only God knew the inner workings of his heart and soul. Only God could heal his heart. Only God could direct his steps. Only God could help him sort through the myriad emotions and questions that plagued his mind. Only God could make a way for him, where there apparently was no way.
The Lord his God, is the Lord your God. He knows the number of hairs on your head. He feeds the sparrows, and gives the lily its glory. He is your strong defense, your tower, and your refuge. It is the Lord your God that can comfort you in ways that will speak directly to you--in unimaginable ways that are just FOR YOU. The Lord your God is almighty, all powerful, and full of majesty. He is full of strength, mercy, grace, and love to help you in your time of need.
Fear is not a part of the REAL you. The Christ in you that resides in your heart as a born again one. (Colossians 1:27) Worry is not in the mindset of the living Christ that gives you the ability to be an over comer. Failure is not for the believer that trusts in God's ability to energize you to run through a troop that is set against you. (Psalm 18:29)
You may get weary, you may feel defeated, and you may feel discouraged. However, feelings come and go, they cause you to feel happy and they cause you to feel sad. BUT, the Word of God--it lives and abides forever! Nothing can defeat God's Word. Nothing in this world, nothing in the spiritual world, and no thing in any way can defeat God's matchless Word. IT LIVES. IT CONTINUES. IT IS A SURE ROCK IN THE MIDST OF UNCERTAINTY. IT IS SOLID GROUND THAT YOU CAN PLANT YOUR FEET INTO AND NOT BE MOVED.
So, change your mind from being "feeling" oriented to becoming "God's Word oriented." That takes time, which takes work, which requires discipline. But, oh how it is worth the effort. Not only in this life, but for all eternity.
No matter what rocks you must climb over in this lifetime, no matter what the circumstances or the obstacles--you can overcome anything with God's help. Follow in the footsteps of great men of God that have gone before you. Study God's Word and learn what others have done with the challenges of life.
Encourage yourself in the Lord your God.
