CHOICES
August 10, 2000
One of the advantages of working at restaurants, especially as a teenager is the availability of buying food at a discount. When your stomach feels like a bottomless pit, those saved food dollars really add up. So, I usually made a point to work at some type of restaurant, often in addition to another job. Evidently I enjoyed the pleasures of eating, since I eventually opened my own catering business in Kansas City. But the days of inhaling a large double cheese, double pepperoni, mushroom, and onion pizza with a 2-liter bottle of pop, and an entire chocolate silk pie for dessert--are gone. Now I bravely wage the 'battle of the bulge' each day and each day's food plan is about choices. Dieting is about choices. Exercise is about choices. Spending money is about choices. Prayer is about choices.
Life is about choices.
No matter what the situation or circumstance in life, as free citizens in the United States, we have choices. Some adoptive couples when they decide to pursue adoption forget that with each choice comes a corresponding responsibility. Since I converse with so many adoptive couples everyday, there are plenty of relevant scenarios to illustrate this point.
Life is about choices.
#1 We have planned a vacation for over a year and if we take it, we will not have enough money to adopt a child--what should we do?
#2 We just bought a new house and have no funds leftover--how cheaply can we adopt a child?
#3 We have $__ of debt, and don't know how we could afford to buy diapers, but we want to adopt a child--will you help us?
#4 We recently bought a 2001 model vehicle and have exhausted our bank account--can you find us an inexpensive adoption?
#5 We are in the process of planning a month trip to Europe, but if our adoption costs too much, we will not be able to go--what can you do about that?
#6 We have invested our incomes into inaccessible funds--can't God just give us a child?
#7 We want a baby so badly, but don't want to pay the fees necessary to adopt--why won't you help finance our adoption--if you are a true Christian?
#8 We have decided to adopt Internationally and need about $20,000. If we could just find 200 people to each give us $100, we could make our goal--how much are you willing to contribute?
#9 We have already adopted one child and want to adopt another, but not spend as much--how can you help us with our second adoption?
#10 We are building a bigger house and are tired of waiting for a child to raise in the new home--why can't it be easier?
Unbelievable? Yes, but valid examples of the many questions/comments we receive from adoptive couples that call us at Christian Adoption.
Life is about choices.
It is our human nature to WANT everything WHEN we want it and to not accept responsibility for the choices we have made, are making,or plan to make.
Life is about choices.
Whatever choices you make--be mature and accept the limitations and the responsibilities that come with those choices.
