Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh it is a tree of life.
Is your heart sick because your hope is still deferred? Many adoptive couples experience a heart that is sick with despair and a deep grief that their deliverance is still a hope--a deferred hope. The good news about these possible realities is that your heart's condition is normal. God's Word teaches us that hope that is deferred does make the heart sick, BUT that when the desire comes--IT IS A TREE OF LIFE! That's pretty hard to grasp when all that your heart is feeling is sadness, but over and over and over again we hear the same comments. Comments from those that have successfully adopted and/or become parents by God's miracle of a successful pregnancy.
"I could never have imagined it was so wonderful to finally become a parent."
"I had no idea how good it could be."
"It is worth every tear I ever shed and every effort we ever made."
"We finally have gotten our 'smiles' back. I didn't realize how much we were just pretending to smile."
"I would go through all the pain and heartache all over again to experience this joy."
"Becoming a Mom is unbelievable. I never imagined I could love a child so much."
"Every bad experience and every sleepless night we spent in worry has been worth it. Now we have sleepless nights with our baby and we LOVE it."
"No one can explain or even come close to defining what it is like to finally hold YOUR baby and know it's forever."
The verses in this section of Proverbs (chapters before and after Proverbs 13) are all either opposites of each other in each verse ( but ) or they are the same truth presented twice in the same verse ( so and ). God marks His Word with figures of speech and these verses are significantly marked with figures of speech. Figures of speech should cause us to stop and take notice--they're the "flags" of His Word so we will sit up and thoughtfully consider what is recorded.
Often the hopes of Christians are easily dashed because they misplace their confidence and hope in people rather than in God. Whenever we invest our hopes in people, we will most likely be disappointed.
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desireth cometh it is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12 KJV
Our desires come when and because we choose to faithfully trust in our great God. We choose to continue to pray and to wait upon Him. We choose to place our hopes, our dreams, and our full confidence in our Heavenly Father, who cannot lie and who changes not. We choose to remain steadfast, howbeit shaky at times, to rely upon Him for our every need.
