Names have been changed to protect privacy.

I didn't even know she was pregnant until they announced her baby shower at church.

I hadn't seen Kathy or her mom for a couple of years, but her grandparents were at church every Sunday. Always quiet and painfully shy, I had difficulty imagining Kathy pregnant; she was only 15.

I had no desire to go to the shower. Something inside me struggled with the thought of celebrating her child's arrival.

Does attending a teen's baby shower condone her pregnancy?

No one hosted a baby shower for teenager June, who placed her baby for adoption.

Nope, I'd decided to not attend.

But that still small voice from God whispered, "Go."

With just enough time, I bought and wrapped a gift, then drove across town to the Pastor's house.

What I found wasn't what I expected.

Kathy sat huddled on the sofa next to the Pastor's wife, choosing not to make any eye contact with the guests. She wasn't basking in the attention, but instead seemed mortified.

We all went through the motions of a party, but no one said "Congratulations." There wasn't any light hearted banter, no swapping of stories, no cute little tips on babies and delivery. The baby part of this event was barely acknowledged, as Kathy requested. She opened each gift methodically, without enthusiasm, dutifully acknowledging the giver. We moved quickly to the refreshments--some punch with a cake. As soon as socially acceptable, Kathy and her mother prepared to leave. Kathy came into the kitchen and gave me a hug with half of a smile.

"Thank you for coming."

The whole shower lasted less than an hour; it was profoundly awkward. Yet I'm glad I went per God's guidance. Each of us needed to be there for Kathy. Our presence demonstrated, "We love you, we care about you, and we accept you."

Although Kathy is a very young girl with challenges ahead, she knows she's not alone.

As we choose to obey God's guidance, we minister to others.
