WAIT & TRUST
Written by Betty Bowen.
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” (Psalm 27:14)
God tells us to wait on Him. Instead, we often want to do things according to our timing. We live in an “instant generation.” We want it and we want it NOW. We have instant potatoes, instant pudding, microwaves, and e-mail. We are an impatient people, and yet God instructs us to “wait.” There are many scriptures about “waiting on the Lord.”
The verse we quoted from Psalm 27 tells us to “wait and be of good courage.” Sometimes it takes courage to wait because it seems like we might miss our “golden opportunity.” Yet, we go to God and He says, “wait.”
In order to be peaceful as we “wait on the Lord” we have to trust God. Waiting and trusting go hand in hand. “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him:...” (Psalm 37:4-7a)
We trust God to the point that we are no longer anxious. As we wait God strengthens us. “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) The eagle soars and glides, and as we look up to our heavenly Father we, too, can soar over our problems, and glide through our difficulties.
As we wait, we have to stay put on whatever God directs us to do. Maybe others are pressuring us to move on, or to do something different. If we’ve asked God to direct our paths, then we need the patience to stand on His promises.
Think about the stand Noah took when God told him to build
the ark. He stayed faithful to God’s directions in spite of
the many years that went by before the rain came. God had
promised Abraham a son and decades went by before he had a
son in his old age. He trusted God, waited faithfully and
God kept His promise.
When we move according to God’s timing and His directions,
we can move with confidence and boldness, knowing that His
way is best. It takes patience and trust to follow His
leading, but deliverance, peace and joy will follow. “Trust
in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine
own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he
shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
What could be a better way to live than to allow Him to
direct our lives!
