LIVING IN THE EYE OF THE STORM

(Any quotations from Ron Mehl's books, are used with written permission from the publisher.)

There is rest and calm while living in the eye of the storm. Really! In the very center of a tornado funnel is calm. Often the storms of life appear to have no calm haven, no calm center, and "who wants to live in an 'eye' anyway?" But with God there is a rest and a haven. There is a calm place to find respite and refreshing.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

Whenever and wherever we are not trusting in God, in His love, and in His ability to deliver us from the storms of life--we will not have peace. Worry, doubt, fear, envy, distress, anxiety, impatience, and general misery are what we do experience.

Corrie ten Boom said, "When you're covered by His wings, it can get pretty dark."

King David said, "My times are in thy hand." Psalm 31:15

Whenever and wherever we rely upon God's strength and power, upon His loving kindness, mercy, and grace, we will have peace. Then we are trusting in Him and keeping our minds and emotions heaven-ward instead of me-ward, when-ward, and why-ward.

For thou hast been a shelter for me.  Psalm 61:3

For thou hast been…a refuge from the storm…  Isaiah 25:4

It is in and through the storms of life that we come to know how good and gracious and wonderful our God is. It is during the moments of despair that we are comforted by His love. Through adversity comes strength and reliance upon the creator of the heavens and the earth.

As Ron Mehl's states in Surprise Endings:

"As long as I dodge life's storms and stroll down the sunny side of Tranquility Lane, I will never know much about the provision and comfort of God…Personal storms disclose a great deal about our inner makeup---perhaps more than we would wish to reveal…storms expose an individuals' philosophy of life. The fact is, you really don't know your philosophy of life until you're forced to open it--like an umbrella in the middle of a sudden storm. You may think you're trusting in the Lord, but the howling winds and slashing rain may reveal otherwise…Storms may sweep down upon us from different directions and for different reasons. Sometimes Satan causes the storm. Sometimes people cause the storm. Sometimes I cause the storm...But no matter who or what the cause, they all work to reveal the same things: the nature of my faith; the strength of my commitment; the level of my maturity; the health of my attitude; the measure of my teachability…Just as howling winds topple trees with shallow roots, storms underscore the areas of our lives that need attention and growth…For the Christian, storms are a no-lose proposition. They help me to see and acknowledge the loose shutters, missing shingles, and rotten fence posts in my life, while turning me back to the only One who can make the necessary repairs." (pg. 58-60)

Sometimes the storms in our lives form gradually, grow in intensity, then crash into our lives and hearts, and leave behind a myriad collection of mental and emotional debris. The most prudent way to clean up this mess is by holding onto your heavenly Father's hand and trusting in Him to help you pick up the pieces, sort through the trash, and make needed repairs. Is this fun? Generally not! But it can be exciting and fulfilling, and almost guarantees growth and maturity in the things of God.

King David lived through many storms in life, some of which were brought by Satan, some by people, and some by himself. Yet over and over again he turned to God for his strength and deliverance. Dwelling on HIS words, will help us to trust in God.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my strength, in whom I will trust, my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower. Psalm 18:2

Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me; Lord, be thou my helper. Psalm 30:10

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Psalm 32:7

But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning; for thou hast been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble. Psalm 59:16

But I am poor and needy, make haste unto me, O God, thou art my help and my deliverer. O Lord, make no tarrying. Psalm 70:5

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation on my heart, be acceptable in they sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Storms come and storms go…"But the Word of the Lord endureth forever." I Peter 1:25
