SETH

As waiting families, we tend to focus on babies. Most of us adopt newborns and we want that sweet little baby to have and to hold. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that these babies become toddlers, then preschoolers, then beyond. One day, we’ll all be sharing teenager tips.

But for now, be encouraged. Babies are awesome, but I pray for each waiting family that you may look forward to a scenario something like this:

Last winter, our three-year-old son found a fascinating leaf and was admiring it when we walked into our town's brand new McDonald's. As I was placing the order for our family, Seth asked me if the woman behind the counter had Jesus in her heart. I replied, "I don’t know, Honey; why don’t you ask her?"

He handed her the pretty leaf, smiled, and said, "Do you have Jesus in your heart?"

The young woman accepted the leaf with an open jaw and wide eyes. She stammered her response. "Well, I think so. Um, well, sort of. I think I do." We made more small talk and she was totally taken with Seth. He even hugged her before we sat down to our dinner. To be honest, I never gave the encounter another thought.

Recently we found ourselves back at McDonald's for dinner. A young woman behind the counter brightened when she saw us. "Oh look!," she exclaimed, "It’s Seth!" He didn’t remember her at all and I quickly searched my memory, trying to figure out why she looked so familiar.

After we’d eaten she approached us and knelt down at eye level with Seth. She hugged him and said, "Do you remember when you came in here and gave me a leaf?" He didn’t remember. "I still have that leaf. I keep it on my dresser. And I want you to know something. I got baptized last Sunday and I have Jesus in my heart." He grinned, gave her a big hug, and went on his way.

How much more blessed can a parent be? This is one of the reasons we have children; to share and pass on our faith. Who knows whether that simple question from a child months earlier was what sent that young woman into the arms of her Savior. Only Jesus knows … we’ll ask him together when we see him face-to-face.
