Pray for God's Answer and for God's Blessing

It has happened twice, that we know about.

Elizabeth and Aaron were a couple that we knew in Chanute, when we lived in SE Kansas. We lived in this small town of 12,000 for just about 4 years, and it was a bustling RR city once upon a time. Elizabeth and Aaron had more complicated fertility problems than we did, yet we had a bond with each other--the prayer and the hope for children--one day. They were bakers, I mean the genuine kind of bakers, that had a dab of flour on their faces while running the bakery in the local grocery store. Every day they were up early, before my roosters were crowing (they used to buy our eggs for their baked goods) baking and icing rich and gooey treats. Their funds were limited, as they were self-employed and did not have the luxury of health care benefits and coverage. We often compared notes on tests, drugs, and procedures. We were going to a fancy--smancy fertility clinic in Tulsa, and they were working with a local doctor. After a couple of years of fertility "Ferris wheel" riding, they ran out of money and we ran out of confidence in our doctor. We both had grown weary of the poking, the prodding, the date keeping, and the drugs. Our husbands were both ready for a rest from their emotionally unpredictable wives too. So, we quit comparing notes and went on with our lives, trying to make sense of it all and still feeling empty and short-changed. We moved to Oklahoma, they tried the foster care system. One common bond we maintained--the ability and the desire to pray for God's answer and for God's blessing.

Pray for God's Answer and for God's Blessing

Then it happened.

It cannot be explained away as chance or coincidence by anyone who knows and loves God. For only God could bring about this answer to a prayer that had been prayed over and over again.

A young woman on her way to Arizona, passing through little out of the way and remote, Chanute, Kansas, went into labor. She delivered her baby unexpectedly and asked the doctor that was on call late that night, did he know anyone that could adopt her baby. The doctor was---of course, Elizabeth and Aaron's doctor and he called them directly. "Come to the hospital right now, and sign the papers for this baby boy that was just born!" Excitedly they rushed to the hospital in the early morning hours of a new day that changed their lives. They had prayed for God's answer and for God's blessing.

(The birthmother did not require or want anything, she signed papers, checked out of the hospital, and disappeared just as she had appeared, continuing towards her destination).

When Dave and Shelly sent us their profile letter and photo, we were on our way to the OK State fair with our little Danielle.   I read their letter with interest and emotion.  I had become quite familiar with the despairs of infertility and adoption disappointments. But, their letter and their lives introduced me to a new reason and motive to adopt. They had enjoyed and suffered the excitement and loss of pregnancy in a unique and heart wrenching way. I cried for the pain they had endured, I cried for the witness they continued to be for our God.  I cried to God to help this brother and sister that He had directed to us.

Shelly and I conversed a lot, via E-mail and then by phone. Situations were presenting themselves that looked good, but did not seem to be God's best. They were specific and determined in what they wanted.  I endeavored to help them expand their vision, their goals; I encouraged them to stretch in their thinking. "Give God your whole heart on this, and He will not disappoint you. Open your heart to what He knows is best. Challenge your mind to accept His will, even if it is not your perfect adoption mental picture. Don't compromise on the situation, but consider stretching about what kind of child is acceptable."  We talked and we prayed, we prayed and we talked. They stretched and they expanded their perspectives, but God still knew their hearts.  It takes humility to really let go and to trust in God 100%, especially when it comes to children. Dave and Shelly did this with their whole heart and one point was certain, they wanted God's answer for a child, they prayed for God's blessing. This prayer request was securely fixed in their hearts, like two feet embedded in concrete. No yielding, no being persuaded.

Then it happened.

A woman in her mid-thirties walked into an OB/GYN office in Orange county at full term. She asked the doctor if he knew of a Christian couple that would adopt her baby. She wanted a closed adoption and she wanted him to induce labor ASAP.  She did not require or want anything from anyone. This birthmother had walked into the office of the same small town that Dave and Shelly lived in, and she walked into their very own doctor's office!  He---of course, called them and asked them to prepare to become parents and get the legal work in order.  This was the perfect match, God's answer to their prayers, their heart's desires, and God's blessing.  Labor was induced within 3 days, and Dave and Shelly were blessed beyond measure to see, to hold, and to adopt their adorable son, Michael!
