THE BOYS' WAR

by Jim Murphy

Many U.S. citizens aren't aware that both the Union and Confederate armies, enlisted the service of young boys during the Civil War. These two armies were in need of men and since birth records were not checked nor readily available, young boys (12+) were sent to war. Although many of these youngest soldiers were employed as drummers and buglers, they were nonetheless sent to the front lines. In the early years of the Civil War, army commands were transmitted to the front lines and beyond by the rhythmic beat of the drum. Hence, these brave young boys were found in the midst of heated skirmishes and life ending battles. It's hard to imagine that on April 12, 1861 as the Confederate gunners pounded Fort Sumter, that young boys would become instrumental in the history books about this nation’s Civil War. Their notes from preciously preserved letters and journals give us a glimpse into their lives as the youngest soldiers of the Civil War. Many of these young soul’s names have vanished, but their tin-types and stories remain as a legacy of their courage.
