ADOPTION GLITCHES

Every adoption placement has glitches. Some occur prior to delivery, some after. Some glitches are not a big deal and other glitches threaten the success of a couple's adoption process. As of this writing, (7.4.08) Christian Adoption has been associated with 282 successful adoptions/births. Of those 282 adoptions/births we can recall 200 that had minimal glitches.

Just as each adoptive couple has a unique relationship with their birth parent(s), so each adoption process has glitches unique to that placement. When we think we have heard of every possible scenario and situation--we are certain to be surprised by the next "match".

Our "match" with our birthmother had it's fair share of glitches. Communication with your birthmother is essential to keep on target with legalities and her commitment to place. Our birthmom is the first in the history of Christian Adoption that didn't have a phone. We had an opportunity to talk for about 2 minutes once a week or every 10 days. She used her neighbor's phone (who didn't speak English) to contact us with pertinent information. Not having a lot of communication with a birthmom presents some mental challenges to overcome, as well as some logistical complications. (Especially when we were flying our birthmom to KS to give birth and timing is critical for the health and welfare of her and the baby.)

Additionally, even though our birthmother was completely committed to placement with us, her physician was not supportive. Here is the first OB/GYN that we have encountered that openly admitted that she is was not supportive of adoption!  This doctor had tried to persuade our birthmother with insults and criticisms. Not only were these doctor's comments unprofessional and rude, but it was none of her business what our birthmom had chosen to do about her baby's future. Like a mother bear watching out for her cub, I became very defensive of the rights of our birthmom. I had spoken with her doctor and tried to minimize any conflict. But why should I even have to do such things?

Simple answer--glitches. Every adoption seems to have a few glitches and being mentally prepared to handle the obstacles that may come can help ease the distress and decrease the stress in the adoption process.

How do you prepare for adoption glitches?

Pray now for the strength to handle the challenges that may occur. Pray for the wisdom to handle any obstacles. Surround yourself with professionals in the field of adoption. (Forget the family friend that knows little about the rigors of the adoption process.) Pray for your birthmom, her doctor, her safety, and her support system. Pray for discernment and for God's guidance as you jump the hurdles and finish the race.

Is the adoption process worth the hassle, the challenges, and the glitches?

Undeniably, unequivocally, without question--YES!
