Our minds are designed to think in pictures.
I have often compared the options to achieve motherhood to various carnival rides.
A normal pregnancy is like riding the bench seat on the merry-go-round.
A challenging pregnancy is like riding one of the moving animals on the merry-go-round, there are ups and downs.
Infertility procedures place you in the spindle cage. You know, the ride where you place your back against the metal cylinder wall and as the ride begins to spin, the floor drops out and you find yourself plastered to this out of control spinning ride. You don’t know if you are ever getting anywhere, your life goes in circles around a monthly cycle, and your body is no longer your own; it belongs to the ride that's spinning without a floor. Although scary and unpredictable, a couple typically stays on the ride, apprehensively considering an exit. But, when and if you do exit--often still reeling mentally, and still dizzy from drugs/needles/pills/calendar dates--you stumble over to…
THE ROLLER COASTER RIDE OF ADOPTION!
WOWIE! YIPPEE! Another ride, another challenge, another adventure--just what I was wanting!
On this ride, you receive a ticket that has no ‘end of the ride’ date stamped on it. On this ride, each couple shares a small bench seat with just one handle bar to hold onto. You hunt for seat belts, but they are often missing. On this ride, you are warned that others may try to control the throttle. You discover quickly that you have less control than on the last ride. This ride is full of new scenery, car speeds, and lots of jerky movements as you climb up mountains of anticipation, crest the peaks of excitement, and often dash down the valleys of disappointment.
However, for those that stay on board often clenching their safety bar, are in time, blessed with a child. The ride is full of surprises and one that you cannot fully appreciate until you are on board. BUT WOW, WHAT A RIDE!
