LIKE CHILDREN

Since we first held Danielle in our arms, at 16 months old, we have tried to teach her how to trust. By being true to our word with her, we build her trust in us, which we pray will help her to learn to trust in God's Word--which is unshakable. With each passing year, she is more responsive and alert to our every word. I often say to her, "Trust me Danielle, I know what I'm doing with this or about this or …" Now, when she tells me something and I question her, her automatic response is, "Trust me Mom, I know what I'm talking about." (5 1/2 going on 15!) In celebration of Kansas' state birthday, her teacher asked the kindergartens to dress up in costume. I had the perfect idea! She'll be sunflower girl, the KS state flower. On that special school day…"Mom, how am I going to dress up with sunflowers?" "I have it all figured out, just go get your clothes on that are on your bed." "But, then what will you do?" "Well, I have a sunflower headband for you to wear, a sunflower necklace, and I'm going to make you a beautiful silk flower sunflower bracelet." "But Mom, how will you make the bracelet?" "I will intertwine the flowers and tie them together and we will fit it to your wrist." "But Mom, how will it stay on?" "Danny, trust me, I know what I'm doing. It will be terrific." "But Mom, how will it stay on during recess?" "Danny, trust me, I will fix it for you." "But Mom, are you sure you know what you're doing?" "Danielle, go get dressed. Your job is to listen and obey, I will figure out the rest. Let me show you after you get dressed--go get dressed!" "But Mom, is it going to look goofy?" "No, it won't look goofy, you will not look goofy. Let me figure out the details." "But, Mom…" "Danielle, listen and obey. GO GET DRESSED! I will take care of the details." As she exited, I turned to Eddie and said, "That's what God is telling us every moment of every day, isn't it? Just listen and obey and I will figure out the details."

There's the big lesson for us as adults. Like children, we are to listen and obey His Word and His guidance and HE will figure out the details.

"Mom, when am I going to turn 6?" "In another year honey, you just turned 5 yesterday." "But Mom, how long will it take?" "Another 364 days, which is a long time." "I can hardly wait to turn 6. I wish I could turn 6 tomorrow. Will I be 6 in a few weeks?" "No, honey, it will take another year. You'll turn 6 at just the right time and it will take time to become 6. Every day after you turn 5 makes you another day closer to becoming 6." "Oh, I wish I could turn 6 tomorrow." "Danny, all of life takes time just like the seasons. And you will turn 6 when it is time. [And then in my best Chicago accent] What's your hurry? Do you have an appointment or something? Do you have a job interview or something?" "No, I just wish I could be 6 sooner." As I scooped up my Danielle, I thought, "Is this an innate trait in mankind to be anxious? In a hurry? Never content with the moment, the now? Unthankful for what we have and always wanting more and more sooner?"

"Danielle, God made the times and the seasons. He knew what He was doing when He created the heavens and the earth. Don't rush it. Let's enjoy the NOW together and be thankful for what we have. I've never had a 5-year old Danielle before and I'd like to enjoy her for awhile before she turns 6. Okay?" "Okay Mom, but I sure wish I was 6 already!"
