DOMINOES

Written by Deborah.

11.1.03

We've all done it, most likely. Setting up dominoes on end, back to back, designing patterns and watching them tumble down. We know this as the domino effect. Scientists call this action a chain reaction, farmers call it a trickle down effect, and pool sharks call it a cue ball effect. One domino, one atomic particle, one critter or one pool ball hits another and energy is set in motion. The energy in motion, might be in the form of something physical, something chemical, something biological, and/or well, the list goes on. But the effect is the same--once in motion, energy continues to travel in motion until the energy is transferred in it's entirety to another form. No energy is ever lost or destroyed--it is simply transferred.

The physical principle of energy transfer can be a blessing for waiting Christian Adoption couples or it can become their mental downfall. Every waiting couple is influenced by the energy released around them. This energy may be in the form of words or emotions and/or physical support--or the lack thereof. We are vulnerable when needy and we may experience the domino effect if we allow sadness, disappointment, hopelessness or negative energy affect us.

Fear, worry, and anxiety can start the dominoes tumbling. If we "buy into" these false evidences appearing real (FEAR), we set ourselves up for a downfall. God instructs us to guard our minds and to keep a gate at our mouths. I've seen this "domino" effect occur in waves. One couple shares their fears about adoption with emotional intensity coupled with deep anxiety, and another couple is ill affected. Then that couple shares their fears with another couple and the energy continues to be transferred until someone decides to stand against it. There aren't any promises in God's Word about easy.

In adoption, the roller coaster ride may not be easy, but it can be exciting. The ride may not be fun, but it can be entertaining. Adoption might be challenging, but it can nurture deep spiritual growth. We may not become friends with everyone we meet while adopting, but there'll be those that we love for a lifetime.

Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statues; and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction; for thy word hath quickened me.

At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments. I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts. The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statues.

Psalms 119: 33-36; 49-50; 62-64
